The full TextExpander window lets you create complex snippets that contain variables such as the date and time that insert text from the clipboard that position the cursor in a specific location in the pasted snippet and that “type” special keys such as Enter, Return, or Tab within the snippet. Use the URL by clicking the plus symbol under the Groups panel in TextExpander and choose Add group from URL. Click the link next to a group to get a download or Add from URL link with your chosen prefix.
For repetitive tasks that require entering the same information over and over again, it is an invaluable tool that can save a surprising amount of time. The TextExpander groups below now use a custom prefix system which allows you to define your own prefix for the snippet abbreviations.
(Many TextExpander commands allow you to set keyboard shortcuts for even faster access.) TextExpander is a productivity app that uses keyboard shortcuts to automatically insert longer blocks of frequently used text called snippets. TextExpander also has a nifty Edit Last Expanded Snippet command: If you want to change a snippet after it’s been expanded, you don’t need to go through your full list of snippets to find the one to be edited instead, you just choose this menu item to edit the snippet in a pop-up window. I use these commands frequently when I’m working on a new project and I know that I’ll be typing certain words or phrases frequently. Commands to Create Snippet From Clipboard and Create Snippet From Selection bring up a small pop-up window for quickly creating new snippets from the clipboard or from text that you’ve selected in the frontmost app, respectively. Smile provides a number of useful snippet libraries, but it’s easy to create your own snippets, too. If anyone wants TextExpander to be put on the priority list of bug fixes, definitely send the Omni Group an email.
